Planen und Bauen in aussereuropäischen Regionen

Planning and Building Overseas

NOTE:

THE DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING AND BUILDING IN REGIONS OUTSIDE EUROPE HAS ITS OWN WEBSITE: http://www.par-darmstadt.de

The department of Planning and Building in Regions outside Europe has been an independent department at the TUD since 1980. It emerged with expanded content from the Institute for Building in the Tropics, which was founded in 1969, and is therefore the oldest institute of this type in Germany. The department was given the following new name in the winter semester 2000/2001:

“Planning and Building in Regions outside Europe ”.

The focus in teaching and research at PAR is on the phenomena of urban and architectural development in developing and threshold countries of the south and east. An important aspect is the interaction of teaching and research with a view to developing adequate solution strategies for problems awaiting resolution in the context of an intercultural dialogue. Based on this approach, contact is established and maintained with architects and urban planners abroad, and cooperative projects with universities in Asia, Latin America and South Africa have been established.

The areas on which the department focuses in its research and teaching include: the analysis and processing of the phenomena and strategies of urban development and settlement processes, in particular in developing and threshold countries; design criteria, adapted technologies, infrastructure, city management, housing supply and gender-aware strategies in these regions.

The regular courses include a lecture series, seminars, overseas field trips, architectural and urban planning design projects and impromptu designs. Guest lectures by foreign speakers and traineeships in developing countries round off the deparment’s programme.
